her life, success and in-depth discussion of her NAWIC scholarship research
paper “How to attract women in operational roles”
Sara Prendergast is a
Senior Finance professional with Orica, leading the performance reporting for
their largest division of Australia. A
Director on The Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) board,
Sara has worked in the Australian mining industry for over 15 years living in a
range of remote outback locations across a variety of commodities, navigating a
fast-paced career growth as a young woman and a single mother.
In 2017 she was
awarded the NAWIC National Scholarship to research how to attract women in
operational roles. Following the research paper’s release, she has consulted on
the topic with many organisations as well as speaking engagements with the
Minerals Council of Australia, WIMnet – NSW, Rio Tinto, NAWIC, NAWO, and Downer
to assist in building the numbers of women engaged in their operational roles.
Sara has a passion
for supporting women in the industry with several years volunteering on the
Women in Mining Network Victoria (WIMnet – Vic) committee. Sara also volunteers with The Smith Family to
assist young adults from disadvantage backgrounds transition from tertiary
education into the workforce.
In 2017 Sara was
named, Exceptional Women in Mining by the Minerals Council Australia. In 2018,
Sara was named as one of the Top 100 Globally Inspirational Women In Mining.
Sara has overcome
many challenges including growing up in an abusive home, in her teens the sole
carer for her terminally ill father and, as a diagnosed dyslexic, successfully
completing several post graduate studies. This has attributed to Sara mentoring
women and young people from marginal back grounds to find economic independence
and life success.
