April 2013 - New Royal Adelaide Site Tour

February 2013 - Adelaide Convention Centre Redevelopment Site Tour

The South Australian Chapter of NAWIC kicked-off the new year with a site tour of the highly anticipated, Adelaide Convention Centre Redevelopment.

This sold-out event attracted around 30 NAWIC supporters right across the industry, all keen to see the $350 million expansion in action.

Hosted by Baulderstone on the balmy evening of February 26, the event got off to a great start with a presentation from members of the project team including Natalie Mills (Project Manager), Kate Russo and Gordana Ticak (Architects), Annie Potts (Structural Engineer), and Victoria Halls (Site Engineer).

The site was then viewed from the Morphett Street Bridge and featured the deck and the first sections of the airlock and wall trusses of the west exhibition space.

Key themes included:

• The challenges of designing for a two-staged development; including Stage 1 - a new west extension which links the facility to the Morphett Street Bridge due for completion in 2014, and Stage 2 - the demolition of the existing plenary building and reconstruction due for completion in 2017

• The inspiration taken by the architectural team from the landscapes of South Australia for the design

• The architectural and engineering design complexities of providing large multi-functional spaces (the new exhibition space is 40m x 80m) with state of the art technology over the top of functioning railway lines (9 platforms, 13 lines)

• The challenges of safely planning and coordinating construction deliveries and installation of massive steel structures, while enabling the railway to continue operating without disrupting existing convention centre activities.

The event concluded with some relaxing drinks and nibbles at Regattas Café, overlooking a picturesque sunset on the Torrens.

2012 NAWIC SA Awards

The 2012 NAWIC (SA) Awards for Excellence was better than ever; attracting our largest ever crowd and delivering a fun-filled evening of celebration, networking, and South Australian food and wine.

Held at the iconic National Wine Centre, more than 100 men and women came together to celebrate the hard work and achievements of women dedicated to South Australia's construction industry. The awards process is a wonderful way of encouraging women (of all ages, different skills, and backgrounds) to nominate themselves - or a colleague - for achieving excellence in their work.

The process attracted a large number of nominations from worthy candidates - all of whom were truly outstanding and inspirational. Those honoured on the night include:

Donna Griffiths - 2012 NAWIC Crystal Vision Award
Cate Marr - Baulderstone Outstanding Achievement In Construction Award
Kathryn Winter - Norman Disney and Young Outstanding Achievement in Design Award
Heather Wincer - Aecom Contribution to Sustainability Award

Many thanks to NAWIC (SA)'s sponsors (Baulderstone, Aecom, Cosoff Cudmore Knox, and Norman Disney and Young), whose wonderful support ensures that the stories and achievements of women in the South Australian construction industry do not go unnoticed.

November 2012 - Christmas Party

August 2012 - Breakfast Discussion: 'What, Where and How'

Thank you to everyone who came along to our Breakfast Discussion on the 'What, Where and How' - a look into the current status of our Design and Construction Industry.

It was a sunny morning at the Majestic Rooftop as our guest speakers Michael Harper from Baulderston and Josephine Evans from JPE Design Studio shared their insights of the industry and how we are adapting our business strategies and services to suit the current, and projected, social and economic climate.

Our MC for the morning, Andrew Marshall from Mashall & Brougham Construction, led and enthusiastic discussion and encouraged us to all move out of our comfort zones and talk with someon we had not met before.

We received such great feedback from this event that it looks to become a mainstay on the NAWIC Calendar.

July 2012 - Hotel Richmond Networking Event

NAWIC members and supporters gathered for a fun and relaxed 'get to you know you' event at the Hotel Richmond on July 17. This was a once only invitation for non-members to attend at member prices.

The cosy lounge area of the First Bar was the perfect setting for great conversation and networking with construction industry colleagues. It also provided members and non-members alike with the opportunity to meet NAWIC's South Australian executive and committee members.

Several door prizes were on offer and one lucky non-member walked away with a full year's membership to NAWIC.

March 2012 - South Road Superway Site Visit

The South Road Superway is the biggest single investment in a South Australian road project and the state’s most complex engineering road construction activity to date. The project involves upgrading the north-south corridor to deliver a 4.8 kilometre non-stop corridor comprising a 2.8 kilometre elevated roadway from the Port River Expressway to Regency Road. Urban Superway (a joint venture comprising John Holland, Macmahon and Leed) are designing and constructing the $842 million project.

Upon completion, the Superway will feature a dual carriageway with three lanes in each direction. It will be elevated by 68 piers (made insitu) and will include 2,201 segments all supported by 740 CFA piles 30 metres into the group and 68 pile caps. Each segment is precast in the purpose-built facility located on South Road before being lifted into place by the 500 tonne lifting capacity crane, either of the two segment lifters or the large launching truss. The project is due for completion at the end of 2013.

In March, around 30 NAWIC members and supporters got their chance to inspect the site for themselves. Highlights of the trip included an inspection of existing structures, pier / segment construction activities, large lifting equipment and a tour of the precast shed and segment storage yard. Attendees were then transported back to John Holland's office in Adelaide's CBD for a drinks, nibbles and an amazing sunset on the skydeck.
