Qld Students
QLD STUDENTSWelcome to the NAWIC Student Events for 2009/2010 financial yearNAWIC seeks to raise awareness and offer encouragement to female tertiary students considering careers within the construction industry. Through a series of targeted events, NAWIC is providing students with opportunities to make construction industry contacts while achieving professional and personal development. On Wednesday 2nd September NAWIC were thrilled to be a part of the first student night for the new financial year. The event was called “Marketing yourself in the current economic climate” and was hosted by Student associations from Property Economics, Planning & Engineering. The purpose of the night was to highlight the importance of networking, particularly in the current economic climate and importance of networking to raise ones profile in the industry. The event was held at QUT’s Garden Point Campus by the School of Urban Development, with students from a variety of disciplines such as Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Engineering and Property Economics attending the event. The Vice President of NAWIC Nicholle Sparkes, Project Manager for Laing O’Rourke spoke on ‘Marketing Yourself to Career Success’. There was a panel discussion, with Nicholle and other leading members of the Construction & Property Industry providing guidance and advice to the students. Students were then given the opportunity to ask questions in an open forum to the panel. Several members from both the National & Queensland Chapter attended the event, and were also given the opportunity to speak to students about career possibilities. There was a real ‘buzz’ at this event, and students at QUT were extremely grateful for the Women from NAWIC who took the time to support those who are at the early stages of their career’s in the industry. The next Student event will be held at QUT on Wednesday 18th November for the ‘Women in Urban Development’ Mentoring and Skills Development Program. QUT are looking to have a long-term relation ship with members from NAWIC and other Industry bodies to provide a mentor program for students to develop skills and optimize career opportunities. Several members of the NAWIC have kindly volunteered their time and skills to this program, and are interested in anyone else who would like to be a part of this wonderful initiative by QUT.
