NAWIC ACT 2011 AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE
NAWIC ACT wishes to thank our generous sponsors and our nominees for
your support to date and we look forward to seeing you on the night. Following the success of our first annual Awards for Excellence in May 2010, we are excited to continue to recognise the contribution of women in the construction industry. We have made a few changes to the awards categories from last year and are introducing a new award category. We recognise the contribution from the women behind the Canberra region’s construction businesses. We recognise that there are a large number of women who work in the industry in supporting roles either in the office or on site who are critical to the success of many SMEs. Accordingly, we are pleased to announce the addition of a new award category to the 2011 Awards for Excellence – the Construction Support Woman of the Year. This is an opportunity for employers to demonstrate their appreciation of these staff and recognise the vital contribution of these women. This year we received entries for the following categories: Crystal Vision Award for Advancing and Furthering the Interests of Women in the Construction Industry Tradeswoman of the Year Professional Woman of the Year Future Leader Construction Support Woman of the Year

Girls Gather Special Event - Sam SheppardSam joined us at our Girls Gather Special Event on 26th of May, at Legends Restaurant in Manuka.Sam spearheaded the innovative Women into Building project - a Sunshine Coast-based initiative that saw Australia's first small-lot sustainable home designed, constructed and supplied primarily by women. The historic, Women into Building Housing Showcase, was a celebration of the many women carving out successful careers in the Building and Construction industries and sought to inspire more women to consider careers within the industries. It also provided support and mentoring to the many women who participated. The multi award winning project received international attention and has led many women from around Australia and the world to contact Sam seeking advice and congratulating her on promoting the construction industry to women with such positivity and recognition. Through successfully encouraging thousands of women across Australia to consider themselves as role models to other aspiring young women, Sam promoted gender diversity in the workplace as a positive interactive way for organisations to improve their skilled workforce retention and effectiveness. Sam has had an entrepreneurial spirit since she was in primary school - at the age of 11 she was juggling 3 jobs and by 17 she had established a cabinet-making business and was renovating her first home. Sam's energy and passion are obvious to all who meet her. She has developed a unique and powerful personal brand as an individual with knowledge, vision, influence and conviction. Her ongoing involvement with numerous associations and organisations has cemented her reputation as a leader and an ambassador for women in non-traditional roles. Ms Sheppard is a sought after Speaker on topics such as the importance of mentoring, creative marketing, gender diversity and brand positioning. We enjoyed a great presentation from Sam, and were inspired by her hard work and success.

A Note from the ACT NAWIC President, Kristine ScheulThe National Association of Women in Construction recently celebrated the contribution of women to the ACT Construction Industry at its inaugural Awards for Excellence on Thursday, 10 June 2010 at the National Portrait Gallery. Over 100 of the construction industry’s finest ventured out on a winter’s night in Canberra to celebrate and congratulate the contribution and achievement of women in the ACT Construction industry. The awards were officially opened by Senator Kate Lundy who spoke of the importance of organisations such as NAWIC for recognising and encouraging women in non traditional roles. Senator Lundy officially launched NAWIC in the ACT almost two years before and we are proud to be in a position to showcase ACT talent through our own awards. These were the first awards of their kind in Canberra aimed at rewarding the role and accomplishment and of women in the construction industry. The awards recognised those women who actively support and promote participation of women, women who enter into and excel in non-traditional sectors of the industry, professional women and young achievers who have entered the industry and have started making a difference. NAWIC’s core vision is to encourage and support women who pursue careers in this industry and in so doing, to raise their profile through events like the Awards for Excellence. This year we were privileged to have the support of our event partners, Coffey Corporate Pty Ltd and CIC Australia. We are proud to announce that the winners for the NAWIC ACT Awards for Excellence are: The CPSISC Crystal Vision Award - Sue Dove The Altus Page Kirkland Professional Woman of the Year - Anita Borella The Meyer Vandenberg Young Achiever of the Year - Bianca Hummel The Training Fund Authority Tradeswoman of the Year - Kelli Miles NAWIC in the ACT gratefully acknowledges its event partner sponsors and individual award sponsors for supporting and taking part in our inaugural awards night.
