"It was around this time last year a colleague of mine mentioned how he would like to nominate me for a NAWIC Award. He thought that my contribution to the Airbus A380 Blast Protection Works at Brisbane Airport was worthy of nomination.

My initial reaction was WHY? I am not doing anything special…….I was just doing my job…what was expected of me.

However a friend Vera Lazarides (on the awards committee) had introduced me to the “World of NAWIC” and I was keen to show my support of this fantastic organisation not only encouraging women in construction but recognising their contribution to the industry.

So, I agreed to be nominated…….It wasn’t until I read the nomination submission that I thought…. Wow I do all that….to have my work endorsed by the Client, the Superintendent and others within my Company was a great achievement in itself.

So I turned up the NAWIC awards night and I was totally overwhelmed by the number of amazing and inspiring woman in the room.

I felt so privileged to be apart of this great event.

It was on this night that I was rewarded and recognised for my dedication and commitment to my work.

It was on this night that I realised the only boundaries for my career in construction were the ones that I set, not those set by others.

I realised how welcoming the industry was to me when I returned after a 5 year break to have my 4 children. The industry is welcoming to anyone regardless of the leave or break taken, whether it is study leave, family leave, carers leave or any other type of leave.

The NAWIC Awards night is the perfect way to send a message to the construction industry of what a fantastic impact women can and do have on it.

I would encourage you to nominate a female colleague or yourself for their contribution……..to help get the message of just how successful women can be in the industry…..to also highlight to the wider community that a career in construction is an achievable and real option for women.

Just being here tonight has bought back all the great memories of last year’s awards night.

I am really looking forward to once again being in a room with amazing and inspiring women and hearing of their great achievements.

Thank You"
